Syrup, whipped cream and fresh fruit, all piled on a stack of fluffy pancakes—sounds pretty darn good, especially after sleeping in on a Sunday morning! Even better is when the buttermilk pancakes are layered with pulled pork and then slathered with Jack Daniels maple syrup. If pulled pork and pancakes sound too good to be true, make a beeline for The Red Wagon Café (2296 East Hastings Street) where they also serve up blueberry or banana pancakes with an option of bacon or sausage just to push you over the edge. Pancakes are also included in the very hearty ‘Truckers’ breakfast option, along with two eggs, home fries, toast and a choice of bacon or sausage.

Abigail’s Party (1685 Yew Street) does a cinnamon bun version of French toast that will certainly kickstart your day. Thick slices of battered, freshly baked cinnamon bun are topped with Okanagan apple slices, maple compote and brandied mascarpone crema. Another brunch option is the fresh Belgian Liege waffles with bourbon maple syrup and brandied mascarpone crema. Liege waffles are denser and chewier than regular American-style waffles—primarily because they’re yeast-risen—and absolutely delicious. Another place to get them is the ever popular Café Medina (556 Beatty) where you’ll find yourself dreaming of waffles as you wait in line. For an extra buck, you can get a topping of your choice, like lavender milk chocolate or raspberry caramel. For the indecisive types, the menu at Café Zen (1631 Yew Street) features pancakes, French toast and waffles. Choose between buttermilk or buckwheat pancakes and between add-ons like bacon, sausage or ham. For toppings, there is a selection ranging from maple syrup to blueberry, strawberry or raspberry sauce. Half and combo orders are also possible … although going home hungry isn’t!
