Vancouver-by-way-of-Whistler singer/songwriter Ali Milner has generated an enormous amount of buzz over the past few months. Her performances on the hit CBC show Cover Me Canada saw the charming chanteuse winning over judges and new fans alike with her unique interpretations of Canadian classics (Shania Twain, Crash Test Dummies, Alannah Myles and more). Did we mention she’s only 21?
Vancouver View spoke with Ali after a Monday afternoon band rehearsal in Toronto …
VV: What has the whole Cover Me Canada experience meant to you?
AM: It feels like all the stars are aligning. Sometimes I can’t really believe it! Basically, I’ve gone through recording, performance and television boot camp. The experience has been priceless.
VV: When performing, are you more comfortable standing at the front of the stage or seated behind your piano?
AM: There’s definitely less pressure when you’re behind an instrument. It’s a little bit terrifying when it’s just you and the mic! (laughs)
VV: Which do you prefer: the stage or the recording studio?
AM: I do love to record, but performing live is a whole different animal. Being on Cover Me Canada has opened my eyes to that. I think I might like performing live more.
VV: What does 2012 have in store for Ali Milner?
AM: I really want to take advantage of all this incredible exposure. First off, I’ll be releasing a new single and then touring, a new album—the whole shebang.
