Bryan Adams
BY DANA MAHON

“Summer of '69”, “Heaven”, “Cuts Like a Knife”, “Run to You”, “Straight from the Heart”, “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman”, and the list goes on and on...
Canada’s one and only Bryan Adams. Born in Kingston, Ontario, and a resident of Vancouver for many years, Adams’s hits have taken us from the 80's to this very day, spanning generations, from coast to coast and around the world.

Constantly in demand, the celebrated rocker is on the road over 150 days a year performing to sold out audiences on six continents. He has achieved number-one status in over 40 countries and continues to push those boundaries, becoming the first westerner to play in both Pakistan and Vietnam.

Bryan was a part of the 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremonies this past February, singing alongside Nelly Furtado. In July he will perform with Andrea Bocelli to close the World Cup in South Africa. The event—billed as Celebrate Africa—is the Grand Finale spectacular, taking place in Johannesburg on July 9.

The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter has spent the last three decades making music history. He has sold more than 65 million albums worldwide, garnered 21 Top-10 hits, earned nominations for three Academy Awards and five Golden Globes, received 18 Juno Awards, an American Music Award, and five ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards for Most Performed Song from a Motion Picture. His most recent contribution to film was the feature song “You've Been a Friend to Me” for the John Travolta film Old Dogs.
He has received an award for “Artist of the Decade” and has been inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame. He also has a star on Canada's Walkway of Fame and his handprint has been added to the Wembley Square of Fame in celebration of his 25th show at the famed stadium. In April of this year he was the recipient of the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award at the Juno Awards and a week later in Ottawa he was honoured with the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

A Philanthropist:
Bryan has, over the course of his career, lent his name and talents to countless causes, including the prestigious Prince's Trust, Amnesty International, Live Aid and Live 8. He was a part of the Concert for Freedom for Nelson Mandela, has supported Greenpeace, and through various photographic endeavours has helped raise money for breast cancer research.  In 1985 Adams co-wrote Canada's Ethiopian famine relief song, “Tears Are Not Enough”. Sung by a who's who of notable Canadian artists under the name Northern Lights for Africa, the song raised millions of dollars for the cause.

A number of years ago he established The Bryan Adams Foundation, whose motto is “Helping People Help People”. The foundation works to improve the quality of life for people around the world contributing to projects that support the elderly, those suffering from mental or physical illness and for victims of war and natural disasters, to name a few. Adams holds a special place in his heart for kids and education and has made it a priority to support children in need around the world. The foundation has contributed to building schools in Africa, improving education for underprivileged girls in India, helping AIDS hospices for children in the Caribbean and assisting orphanages in Uruguay and the Czech Republic.

An Artist:
Adams is also an accomplished photographer, donating the fees from his photographic
projects to his namesake foundation. His photos have been published in British Vogue, L'uomo Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, Esquire and Interview Magazine. His work has been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in London as well as at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

Bryan continues to tour somewhere in the world ten days every month, intertwining full-band stadium concerts with his highly acclaimed acoustic Bare Bones tour. His live concerts have established him as one of the world's all-time best rock singers and his tireless work for charity makes him one of Canada's best ambassadors.

A special bulletin for Vancouverites: Our BC boy will enjoy the honour of playing Empire Field on Saturday, August 21 to commemorate the PNE's 100th anniversary. The opening-day performance will also feature The Beach Boys, who will serve as Adams's opening act. The week-long anniversary event will include a parade, a fair, and a number of free concerts with various big-name musicians and other celebrities. You won't want to miss hearing our homegrown legend sing live.
